THE GUIDE TO THE ULTIMATE HARRY POTTER NIGHT

FEATURE IMAGE

Here at Pretty52 we're major HP fans...if you are too, follow our guide to the ultimate night that could give the Yule Ball a run for its money!

Before you get started, you 100% have to decide which house you belong in. And while we all believe we'd be a Ravenclaw, chances are you belong in Hufflepuff (Hey, there's nothing wrong with that!). Why not let the Sorting Hat decide which house truly reflects you? Pottermore website allows you to do this: https://www.pottermore.com.

"You’ll soon find out some wizarding families are much better than others, Potter. You don’t want to go making friends with the wrong sort.”

Have fun and get started!

First things first, kit yourself out in some Hogwarts style clothing. From Harry Potter's Gryffindor scarf or tie, to something that resembles Malfoy's Slytherin uniform. It's entirely up to you if you go for a full PJ set, just a t-shirt, or even a cape.

Golden snitch is optional, but advised for the ultimate Harry Potter night.

We've embraced our inner Hermione!

While your setting might not be as good as Hogwarts itself, but you're grateful it's nowhere near as bad as the Dursley's, there is lots you can do to help wizard things up a bit!

It's up to you whether you want your whole house decorated, or just part of it. Grab yourself some candles and string, and hang them above a dining table. This will create an atmosphere that mirrors the great hall itself.

When it comes to making things more personal, Ebay is great, or even become crafty and make a few bits and bobs yourself. You can order invites (which come with a Hogwart's wax seal *eeekk!*), or create your own Platform 9 3/4 train tickets or an invitation to the and Yule Tide Ball.

Also, for your guests arriving you could have some Butter Beer waiting for them! It's not as difficult as you think (and OK, it might *not* be just as good as the stuff you get in HP theme park in Florida), if you follow our super easy recipe:

Combine condensed milk, butterscotch topping, and butter in a glass heatproof measuring cup.

Heat in microwave for 1 minute.

Remove and stir until butter has melted and incorporated into mixture.

Meanwhile heat cream soda in another heatproof measuring cup for 1 minute 30 seconds.

Without a doubt, there will always be at least one Moany Murtle at a party...but once they see all the memorabilia and collectables you have on show they'll be as speechless as Neville Longbottom when cuts the head off Nagini.

If you're a major Harry Potter fan, you will have found it inevitable over the years not to have picked up a few bits and pieces. Look out everything you own thats Hogwart's related and either use your favourite things as decorations, or even props.

Follow maps of the castle round your own home to pretend your inside somewhere like Snape's classroom or the library. Your imagination is key right now!

Once you've 'found your way' to Snape's potions class, just like Harry and his friends did in the Philosopher's Stone, invent your own potion with different ingredients to create exciting powers*

*or in Pretty52 terms, make your own Harry Potter themed cocktails with a variety of crazy colours!

Next up, pick your wand! Which one is your favourite: Hermoine's wand or Snape's one?

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as your 'local' Ollivanders, to pick your own wand (sorry, the wand picks you) ,so you'll have to make do *cries* with either a replica you have on hand or make your own DIY-style.

“Harry – yer a wizard.”

If there are kids involved at the party- actually even adults would play along! - use your wands to act out a game.

Imagine you're frozen in time byHermione’s ‘Petri cus Totalus’ spell, and instead of dancing to the music, you could get your players to duel with their wands while the music is playing. When it stops, players who move in the ‘frozen’ moments are out.
Wave your wand to ‘unfreeze’ guests as you restart the music for the next round. The winner is the last ‘frozen’ guest and receives 20 house points for their house.

If you want to play along to more Hogwarts style games (which let's face it, after a few HP themed cocktails, you might just be up for it!) this website has tonnes to choose from: http://www.harrypotter.bloomsbury.com/uk/harry-potter-book-night/.

A Harry Potter night is incomplete without the books!

Now is the perfect time to celebrate your love of all things magical, or to even pass them on to your friends who have yet to discover the wizarding world.

Ha, muggles!

Bloomsbury launched the event last year and a staggering 10,500 Potter-themed parties were held across the UK. If you missed it, or there wasn't one near you, now is the best time to create your own!

Look our your circular reading glasses to flip through your favourite one, and discuss with your friends about plot points, characters and all the enchanting spells. Or even create your own HP trivia quiz to see who actually knows their stuff.

Whether you think the books are better, there is no doubt that the books have done the series justice.

Everyone has a favourite (usually to do with how close it follows the book), but it's a good idea to look them out for your guests. While it is unlikely you'll watch them all in one night, unless you're really hardcore, write each movie name on a piece of paper, pop it in a sorting hat (lol) and draw one out at random.

*prays for Prisoner of Azkaban every time*

Colouring books are all the rage right now, so whether you're having a HP night yourself or with friends, these are a great buy!

Why not colour code each page so they reflect the Hogwarts' houses?

Important reminder: Do NOT forget a sock for Dobby!

I don't know about you, but this scene makes me cry every time.

"Dobby has no master, Dobby is a free elf, and Dobby has come to save Harry Potter."

And of course, we'll all want our own time turner just like Hermoine so we can do it all again!

"Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."
